Our History

The Calgary Mexican Canadian Cultural Society (Calmeca), tiene sus orígenes desde 1982, cuando un pequeño grupo de entusiastas mexicanos radicados en Calgary organizó el primer Club de Mexicanos que se tenga registro en esta ciudad, bajo el nombre de "Mexican Canadian Club".
El principal objetivo de esos hombres y mujeres que por distintas circunstancias abandonaron su país de origen, fue crear un espacio de reunión para compartir y fomentar entre sí y con la comunidad canadiensé; el idioma español, la gastronomía, la música, las Tradiciones y la cultura mexicana en general. A partir de ese momento, los iniciadores: Dolores Dill, Abel Urbina, Leticia Solano, Mireya Nervas, Josefina Zavala, Ema Urbina, Mario Vergara, y Elia Klimuk entre otros; realizaron un arduo trabajo para difundir las tradiciones mexicanas en la ciudad y representar dignamente a México.
The Mexican Canadian Club, se preocupó además por realizar actividades altruistas, entre ellas ayudar a nuestros hermanos mexicanos que se vieron afectados por el terremoto de septiembre de 1985, haciendo colectas y enviando a México leche en polvo para los damnificados. Por un tiempo las actividades de las asociación se vieron interrumpidas, pero en 1989 se vuelve a reorganizar, ahora bajo el nombre de Calgary Mexican Canadian Cultural Society (CALMECA), nombre con el cual se le conoce actualmente.
CALMECA se ha mantenido constante en sus actividades organizando eventos y participando en festivales importantes en la ciudad, ganando el respeto y reconocimiento de la sociedad calgariana.

The Calgary Mexican Canadian Cultural Society (CALMECA), has its origins from 1982, when a small but very enthusiastic group of Mexicans residents of Calgary organized the first Mexican club registered under the name "Mexican Canadian Club."
The prior objective of this group of men and women, who left their country of origin for different circumstances, was to create a space of reunion to share and promote among each other and the Canadian community Mexico's Spanish language, gastronomy, music, traditions, and culture. From that moment, the first board of directories were Dolores Dill, Abel Urbina, Leticia Solano, Mireya Nervas, Josefina Zavala, Ema Urbina, Mario Vergara y Elia Klimuk. The Mexican Canadian Club was companionate in helping our Mexican brothers and sisters during the earthquake of September 1985 by raising money and donating powder milk to the injured.
The Club's activities were briefly interrupted. However, in 1989 it reorganized, now by the name of Calgary Mexican Canadian Cultural Association (CALMECA). And again in 1999, the name was changed to Calgary Mexican Canadian Cultural Society. The society has remained constant on its activities till today, organizing events or participating in important festivals in the city of Calgary, where Mexico and Mexicans have gained the respect and admiration of Calgarians.
